Florida Breweries

The first brewery in Florida was founded in 1896.  Assisted by Henry Plant's railroad the Florida Brewing Company was able to expand their distribution across the state, and was the states only brewery until 1913.

In 1913, William Ostner, a German-born brewmaster from St. Louis opened Jax Brewing Company in Jacksonville, FL. Jax beer was a German Style Pilsner and sold very well in the region. It has been said that Ostner created the six sack (Pack) when label paper sacks with Jax Beer and placed six bottles in them as a way to counter the cost associated with national brands use of aluminum cans.

Ybor City Brewing Company was Tampa 1st craft brewery. It produced Ybor Gold and a 3 others until it was sold to the Florida Beer company in 2003. 

 There is currently upwards of 250 breweries and brewpubs across Florida. A few of whose beer I have seen during my trips in Europe. One surprise was this wall of T-shirts containing shirts from Cigar City Brewing, Tampa Brewing Co, and few others at the Malmö Brewing Co, in Malmö Sweden
